Opening range breakout: what it is and what it is not
30 October 2026 · Candle Trade
The opening range is the high and low made in the first 15 minutes after the 9:15 AM open. Traders watch whether price later closes above the range high or below the range low.
Why people watch it
The first minutes include overnight news, gap orders and early positioning. A range break can show that one side is winning for now.
Limits
- Many breaks fail and return inside the range.
- Wide opening ranges give wide, less useful levels.
- Volume matters: a break on low volume is weaker.
In Candle Trade
The Opening range scanner lists stocks that have closed a 5-minute candle outside their 15-minute range, with volume compared to normal.
